I know it’s not chic to admit, but yes, you’re right — I didn’t listen to Aloe Blacc before his recent success. It took me a while to remember he was once one-half of Emanon. But I don’t blame myself for that, because I never listened to Emanon, either.

Truthfully, after I heard the theme to HBO’s “How to Make It In America,” it didn’t matter. Then I acquired Good Things and let the music take me away. This was a smooth crooner who really had something to sing about, and I was hooked. I was waiting for his music, and I’m thankful to HBO for facilitating the introduction.

Minimalist videos aren’t normally my thing because they rely on the artist having enough presence on the screen. Most artists don’t have that. It worked for the “Flava In Ya Ear (Remix)” video, but since then most white backdrops have been a poisonous concoction of close-ups, unnecessary seriousness, and awkward dancing.

“Loving You Is Killing Me” allows Blacc to shine and showcase some personality. Even without that on display, nothing is going to change my feelings about his voice or the pleasant vibe of his music. But it is satisfying when someone is charismatic enough to carry you through three minutes with genuine talent. Compliments to Ross Harris for letting Aloe Blacc and the song be all that it is.
